“Plug In Better” – staying online without burning out

Filed under: Uncategorized — Delagrange @ 5:42 am

Alexandra Smith, writing in Atlantic Online, has a refreshing piece called “Plug In Better: A Manifesto.”She writes that simply unplugging to get back in touch with the analog and f2f world, to have better interactions with family, friends, and colleagues, is ultimately unrealistic because the digital permeates what we do so much that we cannot readily live our lives without being plugged in. She argues instead that when one is online, one should focus on being online, should, maybe pull shades, shut doors, turn off phones, and focus solely on what one is doing online. She suggests that families might carve out shared online spaces and activities instead of trying to force everyone to meet off line.

I think the business world may be a bit better at doing the meeting-on-line part, but I can imagine the strategies she suggests working in all aspects of our online professional and personal lives.

creating a link in your blog

Filed under: technical help — Delagrange @ 2:35 pm

1. First, type the text that you plan to use as your link.

2. Highlight the words you want to be your link.

3. In the toolbar, click on the link icon. (top row, 10th from left – looks like a barbell.)

4. In the window that opens, type or paste the URL of the link destination, then click OK.

You’re done!

That’s how I created this link to WordPress.org, a source  of infinite help and support.

WIRED How-To Wiki

Filed under: writing tips — Delagrange @ 2:38 pm

This is the website that provided ten tips from Steve Stockman’s How to Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck, but I’ve discovered some unexpected resources there for other professional writing needs. Here are two links to succinct reminders for writing resumés and cover letters.

resumé samples

Filed under: resumés — Delagrange @ 4:06 pm

Pam Schopieray suggest the following Ohio State site for examples of resumés for a range of fields (Arts, Sciences, etc.) and individuals (e.g. former military). These should give you some help in thinking about what you want to include on yours, and how you might frame some of the categories. You’ll also see that the categories we discussed in class are staples, but may appear in different places or in a different form. Some of these are disciplinary conventions, some are rhetorical choices. We’ll talk about both next Monday!

How to find your blog dashboard

Filed under: technical help — Delagrange @ 7:54 pm

1. Log in to your Dashboard using your blog URL + /wp-admin
For example,  http://johnsmith.wordpress.com/wp-admin

2. Type in your username and password (generated in class on Wednesday, January 4), and click LOG IN

Once you have accessed your Dashboard, you can add posts, experiment with themes, and generally poke around to see what’s there.

Point of information: I have added your blog addresses to the Blogroll column on the course home page, so you can access your own and others directly from there. However I noticed that several blogs are showing up as “Not Found,” and I think that’s because you may not have published an initial post. See if creating and publishing a short message makes the content visible. If not, just go ahead and do your Reading Response on your blog as per the Calendar, and we’ll figure out why it’s not showing up on Monday.
