PBS POV
POV (a cinema term for “point of view”) is television’s longest-running showcase for independent non-fiction films. POV premieres 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year on PBS. Since 1988, POV has presented over 250 films to public television audiences across the country. POV films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues. (search)

The Wexner Center is accepting entries through Friday (3/23) for the 2012 Ohio Shorts film and video showcase. Now in its 17th year, Ohio Shorts, to be held Saturday (4/28), features an adult (19+ years) and a youth division. The juried event celebrates the best of independent filmmaking in the Buckeye state, featuring short films (20 minutes or less for adults, 10 or less for youth).

The Media That Matters Film Festival is the premiere showcase for short films on the most important topics of the day. Local and global, online and in communities around the world, Media That Matters engages diverse audiences and inspires them to take action.
From gay rights to global warming, the jury-selected collection represents the work of a diverse group of independent filmmakers, many of whom are under 21. The films are equally diverse in style and content, with documentaries, music videos, animations, experimental work and everything else in between. What all the films have in common is that they spark debate and action in 12 minutes or less.
The Association of American Colleges and Universities has just announced a Global Social Media Campaign called EVERYONE MATTERS. The object of the campaign is to “foster inclusiveness and increase tolerance,” and one of their projects invites students or faculty to make and upload a 15-second video. More information is available here.
This is a fantastic opportunity to put what you’re learning in 569 to good use, very much in the spirit of our “Media That Matters” theme. So put your thinking cats on and start planning!
